What are Thermostatic Radiator Valves?
In many residential buildings or a large number of apartments, space heating is provided by hot water or steam. Typically, the residents of these buildings do not pay directly for the heating (i.e., the heating fuel is provided by a central plant and used without sub-metering). Losses in these systems are usually high, many apartments are overheated much of the time, and many residents heat them while leaving the windows open. This is because the control and distribution are faulty, so we need to improve the heating system rather than replace boilers to get more significant cost benefits.
The easiest and most cost-effective way is to upgrade the thermostatic radiator valves (also called TRVs) on panel radiators. A thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) is a kind of automated valve installed on a hot water heating system radiator to control a room’s temperature by changing the hot water flow to the radiator.
Thermostatic radiator valves have been around for decades. They are commonly used in Europe and commercial buildings but have not been widely accepted in the U.S. residential retrofit market. Anecdotal evidence suggests that heating system engineers and contractors have differing views on the effectiveness of thermostatic radiator valves, indicating a lack of consensus on this potentially crucial energy-saving measure. A review of the limited available literature found that in one study, heating fuel savings of up to 15% could be achieved through thermostatic radiator valve retrofits, provided that other measures were implemented in conjunction with TRVs.
