Product Overview
The THINKTANK TT-WA42Y Series is a bellows-type, back-pressure balanced, full-lift safety valve designed for automatic overpressure protection of industrial equipment and piping systems.
The valve is specifically intended for applications where variable back pressure may be present in the discharge system and where the process medium may be toxic, flammable or corrosive.
The TT-WA42Y is available in nominal sizes from DN20 to DN350 and is suitable for operating temperatures up to 300°C.
Its balanced bellows construction distinguishes this model from conventional direct spring-loaded safety valves and makes it particularly suitable for process systems where discharge-side pressure conditions may vary during operation.

How It Works
The TT-WA42Y operates as a direct spring-loaded safety valve with a balanced bellows arrangement.
During normal operation, spring force keeps the valve disc seated and maintains the valve in the closed position.
When pressure at the valve inlet reaches the specified set pressure, the pressure force acting on the disc overcomes the spring force and causes the valve to open.
The process medium is discharged through the outlet, reducing pressure in the protected equipment or piping system.
As system pressure decreases into the reseating range, spring force returns the disc toward the seat and the valve recloses automatically.
The bellows arrangement is incorporated to reduce the influence of discharge-side back pressure on valve operation.
Balanced Bellows Design
Back pressure can affect the operating characteristics of a conventional spring-loaded safety valve, particularly when the pressure at the outlet changes during relieving or because several relief devices discharge into a common header.
The balanced bellows design of the TT-WA42Y is intended to compensate for the effect of variable back pressure acting on the valve internals.
This makes the valve suitable for systems where:
- Outlet pressure varies during operation
- The valve discharges into a pressurized header
- Multiple safety valves share a discharge system
- Built-up or superimposed back pressure may occur
- Process conditions require improved separation between the process medium and upper valve components
The actual allowable back-pressure range should be confirmed during valve sizing and project-specific selection.
Full-Lift Design
The TT-WA42Y uses a full-lift configuration.
Under the general performance criteria applicable to this safety valve family:
Lift H ≥ 1/4 d₀
where:
- H = Valve lift
- d₀ = Orifice diameter
The full-lift design provides a larger available discharge area than a low-lift safety valve and is therefore suitable for applications requiring greater relieving capacity.
Actual valve capacity must still be verified according to the required relieving load, set pressure, relieving temperature, medium properties and back-pressure conditions.
Suitable Service Conditions
The TT-WA42Y is particularly suitable where one or more of the following conditions exist:
- Variable back pressure
- Common discharge headers
- Closed relief systems
- Toxic process media
- Flammable process media
- Corrosive process media
- Applications where conventional unbalanced safety valves may be affected by outlet pressure
For corrosive service, the actual bellows, body, trim and sealing materials should be selected according to the process medium, concentration and temperature.
Typical Applications
The TT-WA42Y Series can be considered for:
- Chemical processing systems
- Petrochemical plants
- Refinery process equipment
- Flammable gas or vapor systems
- Toxic process services
- Corrosive process systems
- Closed flare or relief headers
- Common safety valve discharge manifolds
- Pressure vessels
- Process piping
- Packaged process equipment
- Skid-mounted process systems
Final valve selection should consider the actual process medium, set pressure, operating pressure, relieving temperature, required relieving capacity, back pressure and material compatibility.

- Actual test and performance requirements shall be confirmed according to the selected valve model, project specification and applicable standard.
- For the TT-WA42Y, the actual influence and allowable limits of back pressure should be reviewed according to the specific relieving conditions.
For the TT-WA42Y Series, the full-lift criterion applies: H ≥ 1/4 d₀.

Back Pressure and Safety Valve Selection
For the TT-WA42Y, back-pressure information is particularly important during valve selection.
The following operating data should be provided:
- Process medium and composition
- Set pressure
- Operating pressure
- Design pressure
- Operating temperature
- Relieving temperature
- Required relieving capacity
- Superimposed back pressure
- Built-up back pressure
- Maximum total back pressure
- Whether the back pressure is constant or variable
- Inlet DN
- Outlet DN
- Required body, trim and bellows materials
- Discharge header arrangement
- Applicable standards or certification requirements
If several safety valves discharge into a common header, information about the header pressure and simultaneous relieving scenarios may also be required.
Why Back Pressure Matters
Back pressure is one of the key factors when selecting a safety valve for a closed discharge system.
In an unbalanced spring-loaded safety valve, outlet pressure may create an additional force acting on the disc or other internal components. This can influence opening, closing and relieving performance.
A balanced bellows arrangement is used to reduce this effect, making the TT-WA42Y better suited to applications where outlet pressure cannot be considered negligible or constant.
The final configuration should nevertheless be verified against the actual maximum back pressure and required relieving conditions.
